5 Key Traits of Successful Pharmacy Managers
Are you a pharmacy manager looking to brush up on the skills that will allow your workplace to run more smoothly? Or maybe you’re an aspiring pharmacy manager who wants to know what skills you’ll need in order to strengthen your resume and fulfill the roles offered to different types of pharmacists. Here’s a list of the necessary traits to be successful in one of the most challenging and lucrative types of pharmacist positions.
1. Organization
As a pharmacy manager, your organizational skills need to be top-notch. You’ll not only be expected to be organized in the work itself, but also in making sure everyone is doing their job correctly and working to their skill levels. The median pharmacist salary is around $126,000 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and in most cases, pharmacy managers are paid on the higher end of the scale. This is because they’re expected to see how everything in the pharmacy works in relation to everything else and meet performance goals.
2. Top-to-Bottom Pharmaceutical Skills
If you have been delegating work for a while, it’s important to make sure you can still do the everyday tasks you ask your employees to do. This will ensure you can help out whenever there is a problem and that you won’t be tripped up by the things your employees deal with all the time, which will earn you more respect in the workplace.
You should also be acquainted with the bigger picture, including keeping up with any changing regulations associated with running the pharmacy. You can’t get stuck on just one procedure or protocol, as there are constant innovations in the field of medicine.
3. Communication
A manager in any field will tell you the most important part of their job is communication. If you’re working with a group of people with skills similar to yours who must listen to your expertise, you need to be willing to listen to them as well. Making sure your employees know they can come to you with questions or concerns is key to opening up the lines of communication, but the best way to establish a good rapport is by simply showing them you care about what they have to say.

4. Leadership
Not every manager is a leader, but pharmacy managers must learn to lead to impress their customers by running their organization like a well-oiled machine. Working with your employees will allow them to see you have a common goal, but you can’t be afraid to delegate either. Asking your staff for their input and support is extremely important as well. Doing what’s best for the whole is what leadership is really about.
5. Ability to Deal With Change
Your workplace is going to change over time, whether you’re in a community or hospital pharmacy. Due to the hefty pharmacist salary and good hours as well as demand for healthcare professionals in general, pharmacist job growth is expected to increase at an average rate of about 6% between 2016 and 2026. This means you’re likely to see new employees over time who will need training and guidance. It also means that the job itself is likely to change and require new knowledge. You will need to cope with changes that occur inside your pharmacy and out of it, as these will all likely affect you and your position.
